About the Study

Welcome to the VIEW study! VIEW stands for Viruses & Infections in Essential Workers.

The VIEW (Viruses & Infections in Essential Workers) project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and is run by the Health Policy
Department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The VIEW study is closed for enrollment. Study results and other information will be posted on the website as available.

The goal of this project is to track COVID and virus transmission in our non-healthcare essential worker community. Our team recognizes the sacrifice that many of the people in our community made and continue to make to keep our cities running. The findings of this study can be used to create better recommendations to help keep workers and their families safe.

Who was able to join?

Adults aged 18 or older who worked in non-healthcare, essential worker roles could join the study. Participants had to work outside of the home at least 20 or more hours a week and live in Tennessee within 100 miles of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Everyone who
participated in the study received compensation.

Our team is specifically connected with people employed in several critical areas including:

  • Transportation,
  • Manufacturing,
  • Education/Child Care,
  • Hospitality,
  • Service Industry,
  • And more!

What are participants asked to do?

We explained the details of the study and answered all questions that participants had. Participants are asked to answer questions to help the study team understand more about who is joining the study. After that, they are sent a kit with materials in the mail. They are asked to do one self-swab and self-collect an optional small blood sample by doing a finger prick with the materials we send.

Participants are asked to complete brief weekly tasks (an online survey and a self-collected swab) that they can do from the comfort of their own home at no cost to them. These weekly activities will take less than 10 minutes of their time.

At 3-months, they are asked to complete a survey online or on the phone.

At 6-months, they are asked to complete a survey online or on the phone and mail in a blood sample.
